Plant flowers in the old SUV — Chevy’s betting America will get turned on by its electric Volt.

Automaking giant General Motors on Tuesday said it was preparing to cut production of gas-guzzling SUVs while clearing the road for the electric hybrid Volt.

The plug-in vehicle, introduced as a concept car in January 2007, will be powered by a lithium-ion battery that can be recharged either via a regular electrical socket when parked or by an onboard generator while driving.

The standard Volt generator will be configured to run on E85 fuel (85 percent ethanol, 15 percent gasoline), but other fuel sources, such as diesel, gasoline or even fuel cells are possible.

The Volt’s internal-combustion generator engine powers only the batteries, not the car’s wheels, meaning that it needs to run at only one speed, maximizing efficiency. Modern diesel-electric rail locomotives have used the same principle for decades.

Fully charged, the Volt should be able to drive about 40 miles before the generator kicks in. The generator’s fuel tank should enable the car to go 400 miles before refueling, allowing it to get the equivalent of 150 miles per gallon.

The automaker said Tuesday it would idle pickup and SUV factories in Janesville, Wis.; Oshawa, Ontario, Canada; Moraine, Ohio; and Toluca, Mexico, as it tries to deal with a shift to smaller vehicles brought on by $4 per gallon gasoline prices.

GM also took aim at the Hummer, one off the largest vehicles on U.S. highways, saying that division would either be sold off or the vehicle overhauled.

The Volt, with an initial production run of 10,000, is expected to hit showrooms in 2010. After that, GM plans to build tens of thousands per year.

Clinton for VP?

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Sen. Hillary Clinton says she’s not out, but with rival Sen. Barack Obama securing his long-held lead, many are asking what she plans to do next.

Sen. Hillary Clinton says Tuesday she will let her supporters and party leaders decide her course.

Both candidates will be in Washington on Wednesday, first when they each address the influential American Israel Public Affairs Committee, and later when they are both expected in the Senate for a budget vote.

Obama became his party’s presumptive nominee Tuesday and will be looking to unite Democrats divided by the long and contentious primary season. Some say putting Clinton on the ticket might fit the bill, but the former first lady promised Tuesday only that she wouldn’t make an immediate decision on her future.

“Now, the question is: Where do we go from here?” she asked supporters gathered at New York’s Baruch College on Tuesday. “And given how far we’ve come and where we need to go as a party, it’s a question I don’t take lightly. This has been a long campaign, and I will be making no decisions tonight.”

Clinton lavished her opponent with praise, saying he ran an “extraordinary race” and made politics more palatable for many. Watch how the primary played out »

“Sen. Obama has inspired so many Americans to care about politics and empowered so many more to get involved,” she said. “Our party and our democracy is stronger and more vibrant as a result. So we are grateful.”

But with some Democrats clamoring for her to join Obama on the ticket, and with the Democratic National Convention — and thus, the official anointment — still more than two months out, the senator from New York gave no hint as to her plan.

She again invoked the popular vote, saying she snared “more votes than any primary candidate in history,” but primaries come down to delegates, and according to CNN calculations, Obama has her whipped, 2,156 to 1,923. Watch why some Clinton faithful aren’t ready to back Obama »

Even the White House seemed convinced of Obama’s victory. White House press secretary Dana Perino said Wednesday that President Bush congratulated Obama on becoming the first black White House nominee from a major party. She said his win shows the United States “has come a long way.”

But Clinton’s supporters seemed undeterred Tuesday, chanting as she spoke, “Yes, she will! Yes, she will!”

But now Clinton will have to ask herself, will what?

She vowed to keep fighting for an end to the war in Iraq, for universal health care, for a stronger economy and better energy policy, but she didn’t indicate in what capacity she would wage these battles. “To that end, we are urging all remaining uncommitted superdelegates to make their decisions known by Friday of this week so that our party can stand united and begin our march toward reversing the eight years of failed Bush/McCain policies that have weakened our country,” said a statement from the four.

Billionaire businessman Bob Johnson, a close Clinton adviser and friend, told CNN’s “American Morning” on Wednesday that Obama could best forge party unity by offering Clinton the vice presidential slot.

A day after the final two primaries in South Dakota and Montana, Johnson sent a letter to House Majority Whip James Clyburn to lobby the Congressional Black Caucus to endorse Clinton as Obama’s running mate. Read the letter (PDF)

Saying Clinton would “entertain the idea if it’s offered,” Johnson told CNN, “This is Sen. Obama’s decision. If the Congress members can come together and agree as I do that it would be in the best interest of the party to have Sen. Clinton on the ticket, they carry that petition to Sen. “This is not a pressure. This is elected officials giving their best judgment,” said Johnson, the founder of Black Entertainment Television.

Johnson’s letter to Clyburn says, “You know as well as I the deep affection that millions of African-Americans hold for both Senator Clinton and President Clinton.”

It continues, “But most important, we need to have the certainty of winning; and, I believe, without question, that Barack Obama as president and Hillary Clinton as vice president bring that certainty to the ticket.” Watch Johnson urge Obama to pick Clinton »

Johnson is one of many influential Clinton supporters, including Rep. Charles Rangel of New York, who have raised the prospect of her joining Obama on the ticket. They say she has solid credentials and wide appeal, exemplified by her popular support in states such as Pennsylvania and Ohio, which will be crucial to a Democratic victory in the fall.

Obama and Clinton spoke by phone for a few minutes Wednesday. He told her he wants to “sit down when it makes sense” for her, said Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs.

The Clinton campaign issued a statement saying she was open to becoming vice president.

“She would do whatever she could to ensure that Democrats take the White House back and defeat John McCain,” the statement said.

Though he made no allusions to his possible running mate, Obama had high praise Tuesday for his rival and downplayed division between the two camps.

The country and the party “are better off because of her,” he said of Clinton, adding that she is driven by “an unyielding desire to improve the lives of ordinary Americans, no matter how difficult the fight may be.”

“And you can rest assured that when we finally win the battle for universal health care in this country — and we will win that fight — she will be central to that victory,” he said.

CORRALITOS, Calif. —  Calmer winds and heavy fog brought some much-needed relief Friday morning to firefighters working to rein in a wildfire that quickly consumed a dozen buildings in the Santa Cruz Mountains a day earlier.

By dawn, the blaze was 20 percent contained after scorching 3,100 acres. The fire was still growing, but not significantly, said Joe Waterman, a Cal Fire incident commander.

“Once the marine layer moves back out, activity will pick up a little bit,” Waterman said. “We have a lot of forces mobilized, and we are optimistic we’ll be able to hold it today.”

About 1,400 residents remained under evacuation orders — more than 300 of them mandatory — while more than 900 firefighters and a swarm of tanker planes and helicopters continued dousing the area. More fire personnel were on their way, Waterman said.

No injuries have been reported from the fire, which was first reported Thursday morning. The cause remained under investigation.

The fire is in the mountain range that separates Santa Cruz and Santa Clara counties — about 15 miles south of San Jose — and the rural area is dotted with homes.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has declared a state of emergency for Santa Cruz County, allowing access to state funds. He was scheduled to attend a briefing in the area later Friday morning.

The milder morning conditions were a stark change from Thursday, when winds gusting up to 50 mph frustrated efforts to fight the blaze. Officials had estimated the fire would grow to 10,000 acres before being contained.

Rebecca Henson, 45, was woken up Thursday morning by a neighbor to smoke and ash blanketing her wood cabin in Corralitos. She quickly evacuated with her dog, resigning herself to the possibility that her home burned after they left.

“That thing’s gonna go up like a torch — it’s got wood floors, wood ceilings, everything,” Henson said as she gathered with about 75 other evacuees at a central market in another part of town. “There wasn’t an official evacuation, but we’re mountain folks and we’re pretty used to independent living. So it didn’t take too much common sense to realize this thing is close, we gotta go.”

The blaze also was swirling around Maymen Flats, a tiny community of about seven homes that overlooks the Pacific Ocean and the city of Santa Cruz.

Ian McClelland, 50, who has lived there since 1987 on his 23-acre ranch, woke up Thursday morning to an orange glow on the hillside, and he immediately let his two horses free so they would have a better chance at surviving.

“There was not an opportunity to do anything,” McClelland said. “There was no opportunity to put them in a trailer. So I just let them loose. They had a good chance that way.”

When he returned to his property for a few minutes, nothing was left except the concrete foundations. Two of his ten dogs also died in the blaze.

“I don’t think it’s hit me yet,” McClelland said, his voice shaky. Kenneth Kim, 66, stood on a ridge overlooking Maymen Flats, and peered through binoculars to see how his house was faring against the flames.

Kim initially seemed optimistic. But then the smoke cleared, giving him a better view: Smoke was coming from his home of 20 years.

“Oh, it’s gone. It’s smoldering,” Kim said. “I feel very scared, mad and … to start all over, I don’t know how.”
